What you'll do

Harlem is an important centre of African-American culture and the district's gospel choirs are legendary. On this walking tour, explore the New York City neighbourhood like a local, with a local guide who is closely connected to the area.

Gospel music can be traced back to the 17th century, characterised by powerful vocals, beautiful harmony and Christian lyrics. Gospel songs were composed for religious, ceremonial and aesthetic purposes and you will learn all about its historical and cultural significance on this tour.

You will adventure the streets of iconic Billie Holiday, Malcolm X, and Michael Jackson! View the famous sites of the  Apollo Theatre, the Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Striver’s Row, Hotel Theresa and many more.

Last but not least, end your tour with an authentic and traditional African American gospel music performance. This will be held at a service in a local gospel church, allowing you to immerse yourself in the amazing music and culture.

Important Note: Out of respect for the congregation hosting us, please dress appropriately and refrain from wearing flip-flops, sleeveless tops, or shorts.

Please select 8am as a start time for the English tour.
