What you'll do

Cycle around the spectacular Winelands of Stellenbosch and surrounding areas and experience the magnificent countryside

Collecting you from your accommodation in Cape Town and surrounds, you have various route choices ranging from 80 km/50 miles to the more challenging 125 km/80 mile loop.

We are initially transported to the outskirts of Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in SA, for the start and then cycle for 10km to warm up the legs before tackling some of the undulating climbs to Stellenbosch and beyond.

Then over the Helshoogte Pass (literally Hell’s Heights, the name is much worse than the 242m gain over 5 km) and on to the final flat part to Franschhoek (final 18 km) for lunch. For those feeling really energetic, there is the option of climbing Franschhoek pass to the top (468m height gain over 5km) to the viewpoint for some awesome views. Additional 20km is available to the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated if time permits on the return leg before being transported back to Cape Town to finish.

There are many opportunities for coffee/cake or lunch (I know all the best ones) along with the most advantageous photo stops as we ride together. This way we have the time to explore the routes around the historic vineyards and so much more WITHOUT racing it and missing all there is to see and experience.

Being a keen sportsman from my school days, I’ve always enjoyed the competitive side of running and then latterly cycling, whilst still trying to climb the corporate ladder in a full time career back in the UK. Having realised my true passion and calling was combining this with my love of history, something of which I studied at College, it seemed a natural progression to become a qualified cycling tour guide.

Having spent many happy holidays in Cape Town, we(my wife and I) decided to follow our hearts and move to the stunning Cape and set up our cycling tour business here, something that was sadly lacking on our visits. Being a very experienced and passionate cyclist I believe cycling is the only way to see and experience how much Cape Town and her surrounds has to offer and how truly breathtaking the scenery really is. Come and see for yourself!

Mark is a THETA registered tour guide (WC 6770) for the Western Cape Province and the Garden Route.

What our travellers are saying...

It doesn't get any better than cycling the Cape with Mark Lawson. He is knowledgable, engaging, and above all an excellent guide. He looked after every detail, selected great places to stay, eat and ride. With his associate Brian driving the van which accompanied us throughout the trip, I can't say enough good things about the whole experience. Choose Mark's Cycling and you won't be disappointed

Great ride out Had a great ride to the Cape with Mark. He's engaging, well versed in what's going on, and prepared to slow down for you on hills... Thoroughly enjoyable ride and Chappies felt like a true privilege to ride. Mark made sure we covered all I wanted to see and do and provided me with a bike for further solo efforts in the week. A great service.
