Head to the highlands for an adventure that gets you literally hands-on with the landscape, on a canyoning expedition on the stunning beautiful River Findhorn in the Scottish Highlands.

You’ll meet your instructor or instructors in Dunphail, near the town of Forres, and get kitted up before heading on a short bus ride to the start point of your canyoning adventure.

After a gentle stroll down a short burn, you’ll begin canyoning by navigating a few small waterslides, before reaching a pool where the water twists and drops away 45 feet down a corkscrew waterfall carved out of granite and gneiss.

Your skilled guide will lower you down the dark flow of water with the help of your harness and a static line, and as you abseil over the edge of the drop, you’ll be able to drink in the sight of the canyon slicing through the Caledonian Pines.

Traverse to the main flow of the dark rushing water, or navigate a blind overhang, soaking up the scenery and the spray of the waterfall before your feet reach terra firma. You’ll then head downstream through atmospheric tangles of trees, interspersed with downclimbs and ledges, dark pools and waterfalls.

The bravest in the group can squirm through a restricted tunnel and past an ancient log that is trapped in the gorge, before emerging at a section of the canyon where the water has cut distinct steps downwards.

After a less than graceful dunking from a slide into a toilet-shaped bowl and after scaling the wall of a natural dam, you’ll eventually emerge into one of the River Findhorn’s most tranquil sections and bask in the Scottish sunshine after a long trek across the jaw-dropping terrain.

On the short walk back to the bus that takes you along the rim of the canyon, you can admire the landscape you’ve just negotiated and really got in touch with.

Back at your meeting point you’ll be reunited with your dry clothes and heated changing rooms to refresh in at the end of your Scottish adventure.
