What you'll do

Retreat to the comfort of the beautiful Munches Room in the iconic Buittle Castle. This gorgeous historical landmark is sure to blow you away, with its stone walls, rich history and beautiful acres of land. Your stay here will be everything you wish for and more!

The Munches Room was inspired by Munches House, once the home of the Maxwells, Earls of Nithsdale which was a substantial Robert Adam style home. This room reflects the Adam style and connects the guests to the Jacobite history of Buittle Castle, the former home of the Maxwells.

The beautifully appointed room has a king size bed and is on the ground floor, with access to the courtyard and its own ensuite bathroom with shower.

To commemorate the 850th Anniversary of Buittle, the current Baron of Buittle worked closely with renowned designer Charlotte Gaisford to choose the fittings and furnishings for this room to recreate the Adam splendour of Munches House. The original house sadly burned down in the late 19th Century, and was replaced with a granite house, which bares the same name and is a truly unique place to stay.

Buittle Castle, a site of significance in Scotland’s history, is now in its 30th generation of family ownership, broken only by a brief 60 year period, when it was outside of the hands of the long string of descendants who have lived at this historic fortalice. The current owners are decedents of the Balliols who once occupied and ruled this Royal burgh and are restoring and revitalising the castle and its grounds with respect to its medieval occupants, and its long history since Roland of Galloway fortified the site in stone 850 years ago.

The history of Buittle Castle properly begins with the Lords of Galloway, particularly in the 12th and 13th Centuries, but the history of the site as a strategic outpost extends back to the Roman period and beyond, when the site was a crossing point of the Urr Water. Eventually the lands came into the hands of the powerful Lords of Galloway, who fortified the promontory further, creating a formidable motte and bailey castle.

Breakfast is included in the rate, and is served in your guest room.

Your hosts are proud to serve a Scottish breakfast cooked from both locally sourced and homemade produce, including eggs from their own hens.  Guests are encouraged to enjoy the gardens and grounds of Buittle Castle. There is plenty to discover in the four and a half acres of gardens, walks, meadows, and historical buildings, or you could use the castle as a great base for a Scottish adventure holiday.
