Overview

Head to beautiful Argyll and the Isles region in Scotland, for an 8-day tour that gets you off the beaten track on island cruises, cycling tours, and stunning hikes in some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe, and stay in a cosy cottage right on the Crinan Canal.

Over this seven-night/eight-day Scottish adventure holiday,  you’ll explore the very best of what this region of lochs, islands, beaches and mountains has to offer. From sea kayaking and expeditions to spot seals , dolphin, sea eagles and puffins, to cycling along the picturesque Crinan Canal, you’ll get a full tour of some of the best scenery in the area.

The adventure is fully catered to social distancing and you’ll have your own two-bedroom cottage for the entire duration, with home-cooked, traditional Scottish three-course meals delivered to your door every night bar one, along with your choice of beer or wine.

These will all be traditional Scottish recipes to give you a taste of authentic Scottish cuisine. Expect starters such as wild garlic pesto and gravlax (salmon) with homemade bread, mains like hand-made pork and game pies, and desserts to die for such as the classic Dunfilan pudding.

You’ll get to visit the incredible landscape of Kilmartin Valley, where you’ll find over 800 ancient monuments that date back as far as 5000 years. Enjoy guided walks along the very best routes that only the locals know, and soak up the calm, rural atmosphere and magical scenery in this little corner of Scotland.

Your guided cycling and hiking excursions will have their routes determined by you. Whether you want to challenge yourself with some hills and a long hard ride, or simply want to take a relaxing walk around the local area, all the routes are stunningly beautiful.

This area and the Crinan Canal offers the chance to see some incredible wildlife. You may can catch a glimpse of deer and rare red squirrels in the surrounding pine forests, watch osprey soar through the skies above the waterway and look out for dolphins frolicking in the sea at Crinan. There’s even the chance to spot a pine marten, one of Scotland’s rarest mammals.

Whether by the water, or wandering through the atmospheric Dunardy Forest, you can be certain that your guides will find the very best hidden routes for you to enjoy.

In your free time, you can head out on walks to the big empty beaches that lie all over the peninsula, find the trails that wind through the nearby forests, or just walk to nearby Ardrishaig to soak up the calm, small-town atmosphere.

Arrive and relax

Travel to Argyll in the morning, and check in to your cottage any time after 4 pm.

Settle in and enjoy an evening in your cosy surroundings right on the Crinan Canal, an example of 19th century engineering which is known as ‘Britain’s most beautiful shortcut’.

In the evening you could wander into the nearby village to seek out the local pub, or simply relax and prepare for your week of activities in this wild part of Scotland.

Explore the stunning Kilmartin Valley

Your first morning with us is yours to spend relaxing and getting used to your surroundings.

The cottage will be supplied with a range of fresh local Scottish products for you to make your own breakfast and packed lunches, and topped up whenever you need it to be.

In the afternoon, you’ll get to experience a guided trip to the fascinating and beautiful Kilmartin Valley, where over 800 neolithic monuments are scattered across the mysterious rugged landscape.

Sea Kayaking

Today, you’ll be off on an incredible sea kayaking trip just of the beautiful and varied coast that makes up the islands and lochs of western Scotland.

The Argyll Sea Kayak trail offers some of the best sea kayaking in Europe. The route takes in some of Scotland’s most scenic coastlines and is a wonderful area to explore whether you are a beginner or more experienced kayaker

As you paddle, keep an eye out for some of the wildlife in the area. You could spot anything from sea eagles to puffins, porpoises to seals, otters and even dolphins.

Once you’ve finished your full day exploring the seas of Argyll, it’s back to your cosy cottage for some well-earned rest.

Cycle the Crinan Canal

This morning, head out on a beautiful guided cycling tour along the Crinan Canal.

This nine mile long stretch of water spans the entire peninsula, and passes through gorgeous little villages and great scenery

The Crinan Canal may be man-made, but it takes you through some of Argyll’s most magnificent natural landscapes. Linking Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne with Crinan on the west coast, it is only 9 miles long and it’s deservedly known as ‘Britain’s most beautiful shortcut’. You’ll pass some magnificent natural wonders as you follow the canal. Highlights include Moine Mhor (‘the great moss’) National Nature Reserve, and Crinan Wood, a magical ancient Atlantic oakwood.

Your guide will take you to all the best bits, and then you’ll be able to relax for the afternoon and take some time to unwind out in the Scottish countryside.

Hiking Day

This is your full day of walking in the beautiful scenery of Argyll & Bute. Fuel yourself up with breakfast and make yourself a packed lunch for the day, before meeting your guide for a day exploring the winding trails in this beautiful part of Scotland.

Your guide will show you the best routes and paths that only the locals know, to make sure you see the very best of the region.

It is a great place to watch for wildlife. The ancient Atlantic oakwoods are host to a huge number of species, including visiting songbirds like redstarts and flycatchers, as well as red squirrels, butterflies and red and roe deer. As you climb higher through planted conifers, look out for buzzards and perhaps even golden eagles circling overhead. There’s also a chance of spotting porpoise and minke whales out at sea.

Back Out to Sea

Today, you’ll get another day of sea kayaking. This part of Scotland boasts some of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in Europe, and there is so much to explore.

If there’s any wildlife you didn’t see on your first trip out on the water, this is your chance to spot it! You’ll explore new beaches and coves, and spend a full day in your kayak making the most of the changing landscapes as you meander round the coastline’s stunning bays and imposing cliffs.

At the end of the day, enjoy relaxing after another active day out in the nature and wildlife of this beautiful place.

On your final morning of activities, you get to choose whether to head out for another guided cycle along the canal paths and quiet country roads, or another guided walk in the hills and along the trails that snake along the coast.

You can then spend one more afternoon in your private cottage and relax for your final evening in this secluded little corner of Scotland.

On your final morning, you can enjoy one more breakfast and then check out of your cottage at 10 am.

He has achieved various coaching certificates and in 2005 decided to put his skills to good use in his own business, with his passion for the outdoors, in particular around his home on the west coast of Scotland and his 'second home' Greece.

Brian runs several trips in Scotland and in Greece, during the year, coordinating activities for both regions, and has a deep knowledge of both locations, the people, places, culture, food and recipes, and will be very excited to meet you and share his knowledge and love of each country with you.

Location

You will be based in Cairnbaan in mid-Argyll for the duration of your retreat, near the isles of Jura and Islay, with Oban to the north and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park to the east.

You will have your own cottage situated on the Crinan Canal, not too far from the Cairnbaan Hotel, a pub pretty much as old as the canal itself.

FAQs

Is it possible for more than two people to go on the retreat?

It is possible to take a booking of a maximum of 4 people for either of these holidays,
but the group would need to be in the same family or Covid bubble if restrictions are in place at the time of your holiday .

Are dogs allowed?

Unfortunately not.

Are kids allowed?

This experience is perfect for 18 and over.

Is the accommodation shared?

The holiday will be based in Cairnbaan, mid Argyll and your holiday group will have the full and sole use of Karibu cottage a 2 bedroomed cottage with all modern amenities.

Are activities weather dependent?

Bookings for the guided week, during February, March and November, the daily itinerary may require amending for safety reasons caused by prevailing weather conditions causing some of the activities to be substituted.

Anything we need to do to prepare for our adventure week?

It is a mandatory condition of booking that guests must provide a range of personal and medical information to the host NO LATER THAN 48 hours after booking is confirmed (for insurance purposes). A separate email will be sent requesting this.
