What you'll do

Overview

Explore Peru's Southern Amazon on a trip to the Tambopata National Reserve.

This amazing 3 night experience starts in Puerto Maldonado. From there, you will experience the enchantment of the rainforest as we take a boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to your lodge. Choose between the Tambopata Research Centre, located deep in the rainforest or Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for a 3 night 4 day exploration of the Amazon.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Today, when it suits you, you’ll be met by your guide at the local airport to board our flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peru’s Southern Amazon and the Tambopata National Reserve.

From there, you’ll start your adventure to the amazing rainforest as we take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have a short briefing and then lunch, that will be served in the dining room. This afternoon, after gathering with your assigned guide, you can choose together from the 14 different excursions available at the lodge.

In the afternoon, we recommend a guided walk through the trail system to discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects.

At night, we recommend the Twilight River excursion that will show you species specially adapted to the amazon nightlife. After dinner you can either return to your cabana to relax, or staying.

Sandoval Lake and Canopy Walkway

Today, the hotel will serve a full buffet breakfast from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

You are then free to choose between the 14 excursions available at Reserva Amazonica. Excursions vary daily and throughout the year, but you will be briefed about what you can do during your holiday on arrival day. They recommend joining the Lake Sandoval by canoe and Canopy Walkway activities as they run daily. Of course, weather may also play a part in your choice.

You can glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow Sandoval Lake, home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans.

After lunch at our lodge, we go to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, at 29 meters above the forest ground where we begin our encounter with the treetop realm. We will walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms that will let us appreciate colourful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. If you wish, you may extend your excursion and watch the sunset from one of the towers.

Gamitana Creek & Hacienda Concepcion

Today, we will continue exploring the Tambopata Reserve, choosing from the available 14 excursions at Reserva
Amazonica. For this day, we recommend taking the Gamitana Creek and Hacienda Concepcion activities.

This morning, we can embark on a trip to Gamitana Creek, located 25 minutes by boat from the lodge. For one
and a half hours, we will explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to piranha, caiman, turtles, and birds, until the Sanipanga landing point.

Navigate your way back downstream, observing the abundant flora and fauna along the way. We’ll return to Gamitana Farm for a short tour to see how local farmers work. After lunch, we’ll visit Hacienda Concepcion to learn about the uses and benefits of local flora.

In the afternoon, we’ll go on a 30-minute canoe trip to look for turtles, sun grebes, nightjars and exotic herons. If we
have energy, we can join the Rainforest by Night excursion

Leaving the Amazon

After a full breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to our Amazonian friends.

This morning, we’ll board our boats for a 45-minute return trip to Puerto Maldonado along the Madre de Dios River. Once we arrive there, we can visit the Butterfly House where we can see a showcase for the variety, beauty, and adaptability of these fascinating insects. After that, sadly we’ll have to leave and head to the local airport to board your flight to Lima and connect with your international flight.

Note:

We recommend booking flights leaving Puerto Maldonado at around 13:00.

It all started back in 2009, when we, a pair of young travelers, were amazed by Peru’s beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and fantastic people while traveling along the Andes of Lima. We thought that we needed to share the incredible places, knowledge, and friends with much more people. Travelers out there were missing out on what the real Peru is about. That’s when we started running tours and we haven’t stopped sharing the best of our country in the most authentic manner since then.
