What you'll do

Arrival Day and Sanctuary Farm

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to Lake Naivasha (1.5 hrs), in the heart of the rift valley. Your first stop will be Sanctuary Farm, where you can experience walking with some of Kenya’s most iconic wild animals. It’s a stunning spot, with giant Acacia Trees and a beautiful lake, where giraffes, zebra and 5 types of antelope wander freely.

From here you will carry on around the lake to Carnellys Camp, where you can enjoy the spectacular views as you relax around their incredible bar and pizzeria. Today no meals are included as you will stop at malls for lunch, and Carnellys itself is a restaurant.

Boat Safari

Start the day off with a boat safari on Lake Naivasha. Pack your binoculars as this is a haven for lake birds. Enjoy views of fish eagles swooping down over the calm waters of the lake, which are home to hippopotamus, crocodiles and more. As far as a first day of wildlife spotting goes, between the colobus monkeys leaping through the branches of the wooded lakeside and the huge variety of birdlife, this safari ticks a lot of boxes.

From Naivasha, jump back into the bus and drive 5 hrs into the heart of the Masai Mara. Here you will arrive at your next accommodation on the atmospheric banks of the Mara River.

Mountain Bike Safari

The adventure begins in earnest now as you jump into the saddle for a bike ride across the incredible plains of the Mara Savannah. This isn’t only just cycling for fun through spectacular wildlife, but it’s also travelling with the aim of reaching your camp in the middle of the African bush.

Look out for zebra, wilderbeest, giraffes and rhino as you pedal through pure wilderness, your expert guides keeping you on track and safe on this truly memorable day in Kenya.

Satisfyingly weary after a day of exploring, settle into your private campsite and relax around the fire, as you regale your fellow travellers with your stories of the incredible days’ adventures.

Game Drive in the Masai Mara

After breakfast, you will be picked up by a 4×4 landcruiser to head out on a magical safari around the Masai Mara. Search for the big 5 as you cruise around one of the most incredible safari destinations in the world.

There a few places on earth that you might stand a chance of seeing lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant in one day, but in the Kenyan savannah which teems with wildlife, if you’re lucky you could tick this bucket list experience off in one day.

You will then head back to Bandas In The Wild for a relaxing, late afternoon swim and laze by the pool.

Travel to the Kakamega Rainforest

Today, you will depart the open plains of the Masai Mara and head up to the lush, dense jungles of the Kakamega Rainforest. An early start is followed by the longest drive of the trip (7hrs), which although long, will allow you to drink in a great portion of the country from the window, as you watch the landscape slowly turn more green and full of life.

When you arrive in Kakamega you will be staying at Rondo Retreat: beautiful wooden cabins set amongst the dense rainforest. Kakamega Rainforest is Kenya’s last remaining part of the great equatorial rainforest that stretched from West to East Africa.

After you arrive, relax in the Grand Rondo Retreat lounge, or go for a guided nature walk through the forest.

Raft Through the Rainforest

This day sets you off on another highlight of your tri – rafting through the Kakamega Rainforest. This is a brilliant mix of scenic flat water with giant palms and wild orchids, as well as raging jungle rapids. You will see monkeys swinging through the trees, jumping over the rafts and the amazing red of the Nandie Flame tree set against the lush green jungle.

You’ll travel along the river to places rarely visited by other tourists, and get a sense that you are exploring true, untamed wilderness. To add this this sense of adventure, your guide will decide on a spot based on how far you have travelled and the conditions on the bank, where you will set up camp for the night, far from civilisation.

After a full day of rafting, you will be very glad to pull into your campsite for the night still with some rafting to go for the next day.

Journey to the Great Rift Valley

After an early start, spend a half day of the river as you raft out of the incredible Kakamega river, and back to civilisation.

After an early lunch, you will jump back on the bus with a 4-hour drive back towards central Kenya and the last stop on the trip; Soysambu Conservancy. Arrive for sundowners and a lovely evening in the Luxury Elmenteita Serena Hotel, set in the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley – a truly magical place to spend your final nights in this beautiful country.

Camel Safari

Wake up to an early start to pack your belongings, then head out on a truly unique experience on a camel safari. Start by loading up the camels with your gear, then join the caravan as you trek across the African Savannah to find a suitable camping spot for the night.

One of the highlights of walking with camels is that you blend into the natural world, with wild animals not so much as giving you a glance. This allows you a special safari experience you could never achieve in a 4×4. Of cours, you can also enjoy the unique behavioural traits of this highly charismatic animal: the camel.

Camp under the stars next to Lake Elementaita, a UNESCO World Heritage site made famous as a flamingo breeding ground. Put the camels to bed before resting yourself, once again far from nature in one of the most spectacular natural settings you are ever likely to make camp.

Volcano Hike

Today you have the option of an early morning where, before breakfast, your guide will take you for a walk up one of the many volcanic craters, where you can drink in the enormous, panoramic views of the Rift Valley as the sun rises over the plains and lakes.

This is followed by breakfast in the camp, before you set off, camels in tow, along the banks of Lake Elementaita, enjoying beautiful views of flamingos and pelicans in this unique UNESCO World Heritage site.

Arrive for a slap-up lunch put on by Serena Hotel, and enjoy a swim in their pool before jumping back on the bus for your 3hr drive back to Nairobi.

Our company was established in 1990 by our founder Mark Savage. Mark was a bush pilot at the time and flew his plane up the Athi River. He spotted what looked like fantastic rafting. A year later he purchased his first raft and paddles.

The operation moved up to Sagana and the Tana river, where it has grown and grown. James Savage, Marks’s son, now runs the company and it has grown into Kenya’s top outdoor adventure provider, facilitating adventure trips to all ends of Kenya.

FAQs

When can I go?

December, November, and May experience heavy rains in Kenya, so those months are a no-go. February and September are too dry for rafting.
