Santa's Village and Northern Lights

Today you will have the morning free so this is your chance to visit the man himself, Santa Claus! Take the short walk from your igloo to spend time in Santa’s Village and enjoy the magical Christmas atmosphere. Spend as much time as you wish walking around and enjoying all that his village has to offer, you can see Santa’s post office where all the letters from children all over the world are sent, sorted and delivered, the elves workshop, many independent shops with christmas souvenirs, Lappish crafts and of course Santa’s office, where you can go along and meet Santa Claus.

Following this you will have the chance to see a natural phenomenon in the form of the Northern Lights on your evening hunt for the Aurora Borealis (4 hours).

This experience is almost always done in the complete dark, this way your eyes get time to adjust to the dark and you see the scenery in a completely new and beautiful way.

On the way, you will also get the opportunity to build a fire, either outside, next to a log hut or in a teepee. Your guide will teach you how to light a fire in the traditional way, using silver birch bark and flint. Once the fire is lit and the kettle is boiling, your guide will keep an eye on the moving sky. While waiting for the first greenish arches to appear above your head, they will share with you their knowledge and passion about the forest, the nature of Lapland and its wildlife, and naturally the northern lights. You will also get some hot beverages to warm you up, grill your own sausages over the open fire and enjoy your snack with the most famous Finnish mustard.

We can’t always guarantee that you will see them due to weather conditions but your local guides will try their hardest to find them for you. If not you can always try again the next night!

Our enthusiastic dogs will happily take you down the forest trail for an unforgettable experience.

Your next adventure  will be exploring the area on an adventurous ride over the snow and ice on a snowmobile. You can go at your own pace and enjoy the views through the forest, or out on a frozen lake. You’ll have a stop to warm up with berry juice and traditional biscuits  before you set off again gliding over the crisp white snow. This is the very best way to get deep into the Lapland wilderness, and truly off the beaten track as you head away from the village and out into the vast fells, quiet woodlands and frozen lakes.

In the afternoon you will be collected for your visit to a local reindeer farm to meet the famous gentle Lappish creatures up close and explore the Taiga forest by sleigh on your reindeer safari (around 3 hours). Once you arrive with your guide to the farm, you will be invited to take your seat in the reindeer sleigh. The sleigh is suitable for adults and children to sit together and as you glide through the snowy forest and white scenery, you may spot some other arctic animals, or at least see their tracks in the snow. When you come back from the safari, which is around 2.5 kms, a warm cup of coffee or tea and traditional snacks will wait for you on the farm. The herder will explain all about their lifestyle and the tradition of reindeer husbandry in Lapland. This is the best time to ask questions and feed your curiosity! Before leaving and heading back to Rovaniemi, you may ask your guide to spend a bit more time in the farm if you would like to.
