What you'll do

Explore the stunning Northumberland countryside on this unique hiking experience that also teaches you the skills to strike out on your own routes - with compass and map reading skills lessons that will help you on your future independent adventures.

Your hosts can tailor your day to suit your needs, so whether you want to explore the rolling lowlands, the coasts and beaches, or the hills of Northumberland National Park your guide will take you along the very best walking routes.

With so many beautiful areas to enjoy a walk, this outdoor skills and navigation course is far more than just another class.

Once you’ve mastered map and compass skills you can use them just about anywhere, so once you have learned the basics and taken the time to practice and develop those skills, you’ll be ready to go on any number of adventures safely.

And of course, these skills aren’t just limited to hiking. Sailing, mountain biking, kayaking, and all kinds of outdoor activities, at the more adventurous end of the spectrum, rely on your map reading skills and your ability to take a compass bearing.

This course takes place over 6 hours, starting at 9:30am, in the stunning countryside of Northumberland.

Your route will be suited to what you’re interested in, so exact meeting points will be specified closer to your date of departure.

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

Walking boots and comfortable socks
Polyester cotton trousers; no denim jeans, please
A waterproof coat, waterproof trousers, a hat and gloves; a sunhat such as a baseball cap for sunny days
Sunscreen
One bottle of water per person, 1 to 1.5 litres is recommended
A spare jumper or fleece; it’s always nice to have a warm top to put on if needed
A picnic lunch and some snacks
A small rucksack to carry it all in and please put everything inside the rucksack in a plastic bag of some sort; rucksacks are not waterproof
