What you'll do

Get out of the house and into the fresh, clean air of Devon and Cornwall, discovering dramatic coastlines, stunning trails and local hidden gems on guided walks you simply wouldn't find alone.

Phrases such as ‘off the beaten track’ and ‘hidden gems’ are often overused, but on this stretch of coastline, where rugged clifftops meet ancient wooded valleys ands hidden coves clash with peaceful meadows, you can learn about the fascinating local history of piracy, shipwrecks and smuggling, and the eccentric characters who inhabited this land.

Choose the walk that matches your requirements in the calendar, ranging from gentle one hour walks to exhilarating all-day adventures. Meeting at a time that suits you, any additional requirements can be requested beforehand.

Hawker’s Hut Loop – Easy / 1.5 – 2 mile / 1 hour (£25 pp for two people)

This spectacular loop on flat and easy terrain goes out to the coast for some high cliff views and a visit to the historic Hawker’s Hut built into the cliff in the 1800s. Great for those with limited time or those who would rather avoid steep trails.

Discover The Wild North Cornish Coast – Medium / 3.5 mile / 2-3 hours (£25 pp for two people)

This route has it all – miles of cliff top walking, a walk out onto Sharpnose Point, ancient churchyards, countryside fields, wooded valleys and a stop at Hawker’s Hut. Perfect if you just have half a day and want to get to some of the more remote parts of the coast. The route starts and ends at a beautiful 13th Century Pub in the middle of nowhere, which offers the perfect place to refuel.

Marsland Valley – Medium / 3-4 mile / 2-3 hours (£25 pp for two people)

This route really is off the beaten track. Walk on little-known trails that only the locals know, leading down Marsland Valley Nature reserve. Follow the Cornwall – Devon border through ancient oak woodland until it spills out into the Atlantic at the isolated Marsland Beach, only accessible on foot. Then a steep up and down the clifftop to Welcombe Mouth and a return on sleepy country lanes.

Shipwreck Walk – Medium / 4-6 miles / 3-5 hours (£40 pp for two people)

A walk on the rugged Hartland Peninsula, with a focus on the history and shipwrecks that dot the coastline. Includes a visit to the Shipwreck Museum (created by my father) at Hartland Quay, miles of spectacular coast views, and a beautiful waterfall.

Valley to Valley Walk – Challenging / 5.5 – 8.5 miles / 4-6 hours (£45 pp for two people)

Can be taken as a one-way route or loop back along seldom-used footpaths. This route joins two of the most spectacular coastal valleys in the South West, via the Coast Path. Walk through ancient woodland in the Marsland Nature Reserve, then walk on the challenging and steep coastal terrain to Tidna Valley. This route is not for the faint-hearted, and while it is physically demanding with numerous steep ascents and descents, for those who are able it is rewarded by some of the most exhilarating and remote scenery the area has to offer.

Half-day on the Coast Path – Medium / 5.5 – 7 miles / 4-6 hours (£45 pp for two people)

This route follows the South West Coast Path all the way, between Hartland Quay to the Cornwall / Devon border. This is a great chance to spend a lot of time on the coast and enjoy high clifftop panoramas while the terrain is still relatively easygoing. Can include a visit to the Shipwreck museum and a detour into Marsland Valley nature reserve.

Full-day on the Coast Path – Challenging / 8 – 15 miles / 6-10 hours (£59 pp for two people)

A full day walk on one of the South West coast paths’ most wild and spectacular sections. This is a one-way route with transport arranged for the return. This route can be modified as we walk so we can lengthen or shorten the route as required. A great route for those wanting a challenge and to experience everything this part of the coast has to offer.

I grew up exploring this wild and remote stretch of the Cornish coast, often hunting for remains of old shipwrecks with my father. This got me hooked on the great outdoors, and led me to training as a wilderness guide deep in the forests of Finland. I have led guided walks all over Europe and the US, and hiked many of the world’s great wilderness trails including the 4,400km Pacific Crest Trail. Having spent over ten years hiking and guiding abroad I can safely say that my local area is one of the most spectacular landscapes I have ever seen. I am really excited to share my knowledge of this area with anyone who wants a walking adventure off the beaten track!

What our travellers are saying...

If you are coming to the north Cornwall coast, I thoroughly recommend spending a couple of hours with David walking the coastal path. He took us on a route with magnificent views of the cliffs and beaches and shared stories about local history and his family. David is a wilderness guide who really knows about the local ecology. It was a really wonderful experience - not to be missed!

Gill

David takes you on an absolutely picturesque walk along the northern Cornish coast that would have been difficult for a newcomer to the area to discover. The coastal views will forever be embedded in my memory.

FAQs

How difficult are the walks?

There are steep sections of the coast path on most walks, so guests require a reasonable level of fitness and some familiarity with walking on unpaved trails. Walks avoiding steep sections on request.

Can I get there on public transport?

Due to the rural setting of the walk, it is almost impossible to arrive and depart on the same day via public transport, so your own transportation is a must.

Can I go on the walks on my own?

Yes, you can go for walks on your own but a single supplement cost of anything between £10 and £30 will be added. The shorter the walk you choose, the lower the single supplement.
