Snowshoeing, Ice-Fishing and Northern Lights Wilderness Tour

10am: Snowshoeing and Ice-Fishing (4 hours)

This tour allows you to experience Lapland nature at its best with two local activities combined together: snowshoeing through the forests and ice-fishing on an immense frozen lake. Your guide will drive you around 20km away from Rovaniemi to find the perfect peaceful place to start your trip. Before heading into the forests, you will be given some instructions how to use the snowshoes and walk on snow. As you snowshoe through the quiet snowy landscapes, you will already feel the harmony of Lapland nature that surrounds you. You will end up in an immense open area made of ice and snow, where you will find a promising spot on the lake and try to catch your lunch!

Your guide will help you drill your own hole in the ice, and will teach you the basic techniques how to ice-fish, and it won’t be long before you’ll be able to feel the first bites! This will be the perfect moment to appreciate the silence that reigns over the lake. Barbecue snacks (and your fish grilled if you catch one!) included.

Evening: Northern Lights Wilderness Tour (4 hours)

Get ready to experience the beauty of the Aurora Borealis! The weather forecasts and the solar activity reports are always checked during the day, so that we can adapt the departure of the tour and get the best chance to observe the Northern Lights. You will be informed in due time about your pick-up time and your aurora expert will come to collect you directly from your accommodation.

This excursion will offer you the opportunity to head into the Lapland wilderness and explore the arctic nature. You’ll embark on different routes with your guide that will always lead you to fantastic scenery. You’ll take a short walk through the very old, white and snowy forest, across hanging bridges and over frozen lakes –  hopefully, with Auroras dancing over your heads! Your guide will always check the weather conditions and you may decide to try another location if you are willing to. As this excursion is an Aurora hunt, you may get the chance to visit up to 3 locations and increase your chance to observe the Northern Lights.

We recommend you bring your own camera with you to capture the auroras. In all cases, your guide will be equipped with a professional camera and will take as many pictures as possible (feel free to ask him!) of you and the Northern Lights. A link to download all the pictures will be sent to you the next day. The Northern Lights Wilderness Tour lasts 4 hours. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your accommodation.

Ski Trekking Safari

10am: Ski Trekking Safari (3.5 hours)

There is no better way to explore untouched parts of the Arctic nature than backcountry skiing! As your professional guide will take you away from Rovaniemi, straight into the Taiga forest, you will get the chance to explore some of the breathtaking scenery of Lapland using backcountry skis and leave your own track in the deep snow where no-one has been before you! Backcountry skiing, or off-piste skiing, is a great way to explore remote areas of Lapland covered in deep snow. Unlike alpine skiing and cross-country skiing that are practiced on groomed trails, backcountry skiing allows you for a more adventurous trip through hilly terrains, forests and lakes. As the skis are equipped with a skin, they allow you to go uphill, and downhill without excessive speed. Like snowshoeing, it does not require much practice to get used to the gears and to the techniques to slide on deep snow. This makes it very comfortable and easy to use, even for beginners!

Your guide will choose a location that best fits the level and the needs of the group. They will also provide you with safety instructions and teach you some basic techniques how to use the skis on fresh snow. Refreshments and a typical Finnish barbecue snack included. After the visit, your guide will drive you back to Rovaniemi.

The afternoon is free: keep some time for yourself, meet Santa Claus in his house or visit the Arktikum Museum on your own to complete a perfect day!

Authentic Reindeer Farm Visit and Husky Safari

9am: Authentic Reindeer Farm Visit (2 hours)

Today you will meet the most iconic animal of Lapland! Your guide will drive you to one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Lapland, located on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. While taking in the surroundings, you will learn about the reindeer from the herders. They will show you around the traditional farm and, because it is the first visit of the day, you will be given a chance to feed them their favourite food, lichen. During this visit, you will also have the opportunity to test your driving skills with a short loop sleigh ride of 400m (more or less 2 min of ride) before having some time around the fire in the company of a herder who will answer all your questions and share their knowledge and passion for reindeers with you.

This visit will give you a great insight into the reindeer and the reindeer husbandry. After the visit, your guide will drive you back to Rovaniemi, where you will have time to have lunch before your afternoon activity.

1:30pm: Visit to a Husky Farm with a 10km Husky Safari (4 hours)

In the afternoon you’ll visit an amazing husky kennel located 30 minutes drive away from Rovaniemi. At the farm, you will be welcomed by the mushers and the excited barking of their lovely dogs. You will be introduced to your dog team and will be given the safety instructions and some tips how to drive the sleigh. Once ready, you will embark for a great sleigh ride adventure through the winter scenery for about 10 km (around 1 hour depending on the snow conditions). It is always two adults maximum for the sleigh ride (one driving, and one passenger sitting in the sleigh), with the option to switch the driver and passenger halfway.

After the safari, the mushers will take time to share their lifestyle, explain what the job of a musher consists of, how they train their dogs and answer all your questions around an open fire. All the dogs are very photo enthusiasts, so don’t forget to bring your camera with you!

Evening: Northern Lights Wilderness Tour (4 hours)

Catch your second chance to capture the beautiful Northern Lights! If the conditions allow it, your guide will take you to a different route so that you can enjoy a different experience and get to see more of the Winter scenery of Lapland. Your aurora guide will have their professional camera with them and you will receive all the pictures by email the next day.

Visit Korouoma Canyon Frozen Waterfalls

Hike around the Korouoma Canyon national park to admire the majestic frozen waterfalls. Korouoma is 30km long and up to 130 meters deep canyon fracture valley located 110 kilometers south-east of Rovaniemi. It offers breathtaking scenery all year around, with it’s cliffs, rapids and waterfalls.

This natural reserve is also home of rare species, and a great nature area for hikers. In the Winter time, the waterfalls turn into fantastic ice formations which are well-known for ice-climbing and is a great attraction for tourists coming from all around the world. BBQ lunch included.

After serving in the Royal Marine Commando's for 5 years and working as a professional sailing & outdoor instructor, I was looking for a place to fulfill my vision and dreams. I found it here in the Finnish Lapland, where I can share the natural phenomena, opportunities, and beauty this amazing place has to offer. Lapland is also a great place for me to raise my family. Local nature connects people as you can share beautiful moments with strangers in very peaceful environments. Winters here are long, and without doubt this is the hardest job I have ever done. But I love it and I can promise the warmest of welcomes and an amazing time!
